This Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Planning Commission will vote on reducing occupancy of duplexes and houses in single-family zoned districts from six to four unrelated adults. The Planning Commission’s recommendation will go to the full Council, which will vote in February.
Now is the time. Your presence is needed at this very critical meeting. We need to show citywide support for occupancy reduction. Council action will remove developers’ financial incentive to build dorm style housing in our neighborhoods. If the Council does not perceive the need to act, it will send a green light to developers all over the city to replace single-family homes with stealth dorms.
Please come to City Hall this Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. and make your voice heard. Your presence will show officials the faces of the people who are watching their neighborhoods being devastated.
The opposition is strong, and some officials want to wait. Delays would be destructive, because developers are moving quickly to buy homes, tear them down and put up dorm housing. Three homes in Northfield were removed this month; two more are being torn down in Heritage neighborhood and three now being permitted in north Hyde Park. We cannot wait.
Tell your story of how this dorm housing is destroying affordable family homes and how they are devastating your neighborhood, or simply show up to register your support.
There is free parking in the City Hall parking garage and this item is fourth on the agenda so it will be an early night. We cannot do it without you.
